Close call vs. Vols knocks Tide from AP top spot

By Bud L. Ellis

In the eyes of The Associated Press voters, Alabama’s two-point victory over Tennessee Saturday wasn’t enough to keep the Crimson Tide on top of the rankings.

Alabama edged the Volunteers 12-10 when Terrence Cody blocked a field goal on the game’s final play, but the Crimson Tide slipped back behind SEC rival Florida when this week’s poll came out Sunday.

Alabama fell to No. 2 in the rankings, and remained second in the BCS Standings behind the defending national champion Gators. Florida received 30 first-place votes in this week’s poll of sports writers. The Crimson Tide earned 23 first-place votes.

Should the Crimson Tide and Gators win out the rest of the way, both teams will get a chance to prove who’s better in the SEC championship game Dec. 5 in Atlanta. The winner of the SEC title contest likely will earn one of the two spots in the BCS Championship Game.

Alabama squeaks past Tennessee, 12-10

The Alabama Crimson Tide made some of their own luck in a 12-10 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers.

Coming off a fairly close win last week, the Crimson Tide did very little to show it was an aberration.

The offense was nearly non-existent yet again, leaving it up to the defense to put the game on their backs.

However, Alabama had to block two field goals and watch another one come up short before coming away with the victory.

One of the blocked field goals came on the last play of the game. Special teams proved to be the difference, but Alabama better get their offense going before they get to the SEC championship game.

Top-ranked Tide hold on … barely

By Bud L. Ellis

The top-ranked team in the nation survived … barely.

Alabama, one week after ascending to the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press rankings, blocked a field goal on the final play of the game to hold off Tennessee 12-10, in a fierce defensive battle in Tuscaloosa.

Terrence Cody blocked Daniel Lincoln’s 44-yard field-goal attempt to keep the Crimson Tide– ranked No. 2 in the BCS Standings — unbeaten on the season. Leigh Tiffin booted four field goals to account for all of Alabama’s scoring.

The Tide held on after Eric Berry recovered a fumble and Tennessee scored a touchdown with less than 90 seconds left. The Vols then recovered an onside kick and drove downfield, but Cody got his hand on Lincoln’s attempt to save the day and save Alabama’s season.

It was the second field-goal block by Cody in the fourth quarter.

Alabama finished with just 256 yards of total offense and committed two turnovers, but stayed in the game thanks to a strong defense that gave up 341 yards but just one touchdown.

Now we’ll wait and see how the Gators fare later Saturday, and what the rankings say when they come out on Sunday.

Alabama pulls away from South Carolina, 20-6

It wasn’t a dominating performance, but the Alabama Crimson Tide eventually pulled away from the South Carolina Gamecocks, 20-6.

The Crimson Tide struggled offensively in the first half and held just a 13-6 lead heading into halftime.

They struggled more offensively in the second half, managing just a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Fortunately for the Crimson Tide, their defense really stepped up and kept the Gamecocks off the scoreboard.

South Carolina had plenty of opportunities to really make this a close one but could not excute offensively.

‘Bama Players Won’t Use Tape to Spot Kicks

Leave it to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier to drum up some SEC controversy.

Alabama found itself in a bit of hot water this week, after Spurrier claimed he saw the Crimson Tide holder illegally using white tape to spot kicks. Spurrier and South Carolina filed an official complaint with SEC officials on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Saban announced Wednesday that Alabama holders would no longer use white tape to spot the placement of the ball for kicks, adding that half the teams in the SEC use some type of marker.

“We certainly don’t want our players to do anything that’s illegal,” Saban said. “It is a 5-yard penalty if you do anything to enhance the spot. We’ve done some research on it, and over half the teams in the league do something with it.

“They put grass there or a piece of mud or wherever it is, so the kicker knows where the ball’s going to be spotted. We even saw verification where last year South Carolina’s kicker did it.”

When asked about it after the game on Saturday, Spurrier said, “I’ve never seen that before. But I’m sure they’ve probably been doing it all year.”

Spurrier Asks SEC About ‘Bama Tape Trick

Alabama fans are going to be calling South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier a sore loser this week.

While going over tape of the Gamecocks’ loss to ‘Bama, Spurrier claims that he saw the holder for Alabama put a small piece of white tape on the ground to help him spot PATs and field goals.

“I thought you just had to put it on the ground. But they had a little piece of white tape or something, and I looked at it on tape and I said, ‘What’s that little piece of white there?’ Then after the guy kicked it he grabbed it and put it back in his pocket,” Spurrier said.

South Carolina officials formally filed a complaint with the SEC on Tuesday, and SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said that they will be looking into the issue.

“I’ve never seen that before,” Spurrier said. “But I’m sure they’ve probably been doing it all year.”

The NCAA football rulebook (Rule 6-3; Article 10; subsection d) says:

“Any device or material used to mark the spot of a scrimmage place kick or elevate the ball makes the kick illegal.”

The penalty is “illegal kick” and is five yards from the previous spot.

Upshaw to take anger management course

Sophomore linebacker Courtney Upshaw has been ordered to take an anger management course to resolve a misdemeanor domestic violence and harassment case, the Associated Press reported. Both he and the female student involved in the case received the same decision from the judge.

As far as football goes, head coach Nick Saban has already said that Upshaw won’t be suspended. Good thing, too, as the 3nd-ranked Crimson Tide visit the No. 20 Mississippi Rebels on Saturday and will certainly need the services of Upshaw, who made the first start of his career last week at Kentucky. He made the most of his opportunity, returning a fumble for a touchdown, and he’s also registered a sack in limited action this year. Upshaw has the ability and instinct to make plays, but his experience will be tested against Jevan Snead and Co. Of course, having stud Rolando McClain next to him will make life quite a bit easier for the 19-year-old.

Tide Roll Past Kentucky

Sensing a possible opportunity to move up in the polls with No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas inactive this week, No. 3 Alabama stomped the Kentucky Wildcats, 38-20.

No. 1 Florida played the Wildcats last week, jumping out to a huge lead with a 31-point first quarter en route to a 41-7 win, albeit a win where Heisman-winning QB Tim Tebow sustained his first career concussion.

Alabama took a little longer to get their offense rolling, but they ultimately proved themselves to be the much more dominant team.

“We just played the top two defenses in the country,” Kentucky coach Bob Brooks said. “Alabama’s defense is just as good as Florida’s. They’re a great football team. I expect to see them in the SEC championship game.”

Alabama running back Mark Ingram ran for a career high 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Tide, who face No. 21 Ole Miss next week.
